First Contact – Visual Pass

I was tasked with doing the final visuals for the second level, First Contact, in the team game for our Game Studio module. To read more about the game, Audacity, have a looksie here

After receiving the level in its raw form it was time for the visual pass. In this case that meant texturing the assets in Substance Painter, adding a diegetic GUI for a simple pin-code entering mechanic, adding a bit of VFX and suitably lighting it.

Below are some examples of the finished product I know it’s dark, that’s the point.

Diegetic GUI

weeksCode

Here is the diegetic GUI in action, you have to spot the super secret, super not-an-innuendo code in the rec room and type it in to reset the system. Also allowed me to use the annoyingly under-utilised world-space canvas while making the interface.

Also seen in the gif above is the little loading animation I made for the loading screen, blink and you’ll miss it. But here it is in full:

VFX & Lighting

You’ve seen the lighting style I went for throughout but here are some examples of the particles I made and a bit of moody volumetric lighting that I also just love.

So there you have it a bit of a look at some of the creative muscles I got to flex. It’s all relatively simplistic but I loved doing it, having been writing the dissertation and coding solidly for a few months beforehand, and I think you’ll agree, it turned out pretty great!

Music

Due to time constraints, we weren’t able to put in the moving piece our composer, Danny McMahon, wrote for this level so I thought I’d show it off here. In this level JJ, the player character and protagonist, hears his mother’s voice for the first time in a voice log unearthed by his AI, Remy. Enjoy
